Laura, sorry about jumping into an old thread, but I did want to add one thing. I think you're correct about needing to sell parents more than the kids. I've heard many parents complain about having to "waste" another weekend hanging out while their child plays in a tournament. Or related, they don't have the time to spend hanging out at a tournament because they have other children to take to soccer, baseball, etc. Sports games may require a few hours of their time while chess tournaments can be a whole day or even a whole weekend.

If you're running into this complaint, perhaps you could suggest that parents team up and take shifts "hanging out" at the tournament with each other's children and alternately relieving each other to go take care of other business.

I enjoy your blog. Keep it up!

Logical Thinking: In chess emotions are useless and usually problematic. As in life emotions usually get you into problems. If children can learn to see past their emotions and focus in on what is really important.

Is there a way to work out a simple code by which kids can record their moves? For example K2 for the second knight, so it becomes quicker. The only trouble would be the pawns.

You build a strong case for teaching children chess. In addition to teaching strategy and problem solving, I think it teaches patience. In today's world where everything is instant and all of us are constantly bombarded by chess is a thinking game. I wish chess lessons had been available to my children. I used to take them to the YMCA for summer programs and there were lots of activities to sign up for but (as I remember) they were all physical. Chess would have been a wonderful option and something my son would have loved.

Love the analogy between backup plans and chess moves! How is it I'm so organized and have backup plans yet chess escapes me. I've played it in the past yet it's been years. I like patience maybe?

I think chess does strengthen the problem solving capabilities that are need in business. Often quick decsions are needed and options and consequences have to be determined in what seems shorter time periods.

Until reading your posts, I hadn't thought of how children could develop these skills through chess.
